Six Thinking Hats

Dr. Edward de Bono has developed many useful aids to thinking and creativity. The Six Thinking Hats suggest different roles that must be represented in a thinking team to develop best solutions. Any member of the team at any time can "put on a particular hat". He or she would then make an observation on the problem at hand from that perspective.

white hat The White Hat calls for information known or needed.
yellow hat The Yellow hat symbolizes brightness and optimism.
black hat The Black hat is judgment-the devil's advocate or why something may not work.
red hat The Red Hat signifies feelings, hunches, and intuition.
green hat The Green hat focuses on creativity: the possibilities, alternatives, and new ideas.
blue hat The Blue Hat is used to manage the thinking process.

Dr. de Bono has created an industry around his many techniques and approaches to creativity. The link below is to his organization's workshop on the Six Thinking Hats. Many others also give such workshops around the world.
